Fraser Brown MacKenna were runners up in an international design competition run by the RIAS to create a vision for the regeneration of two neighbourhoods in Strategic Masterplan of Dumfries and Stranraer. Working with Luszczak Associates, our approach was based on the redevelopment of existing under-used sites to provide new family homes, linked by a robust landscape framework. Four character areas define each new neighbourhood – each a direct response to its unique site and setting to create a distinctive place and enhance the existing ecology.
A holistic approach to community building ensures that built forms are brought to the street face, creating safe and overlooked places with an active street scene. Each wide-frontage house benefits from a generous garden, located around home zones with no more than 20 homes off each street to encourage self-policing and passive supervision.
