Student Village / Paradise Street / Coventry

Inspired by the original medieval city, Paradise Street responds to the monumental scale of post-war Coventry to create a modern student village serving a millennial clientele. 893 technology-rich new homes are set around a 2,000sqm piazza, where the intimacy of a walled city meets the opportunities of our networked society. Designed by Fraser Brown MacKenna and Project Managed by K2 Consultancy for Axo Student Living, the final phase of the new development was completed by Galliford Try in September 2019.

A modern, best-in-class student environment
The intimacy of a medieval walled city meets the opportunities offered by the global village at Paradise Street. Homes are arranged in a ‘wall’ and three towers which address the busy ring-road, with a gatehouse opening into a 2,000sqm piazza. But there is a human scale to these monumental forms, with a variety of types and sizes of accommodation and a thoughtful approach to the detailing of the journey into each home using natural light, surface textures and colours to create intimacy and individuality. Paradise Street offers:

  • A choice of 893 high quality homes of different types and sizes, with studio rooms and study bedrooms arranged in clusters of different sizes, with their own kitchens and separate living spaces.
  • 1,400sqm of social space including, common rooms, a café/bar, cinema and gym
  • A 24hr concierge providing a warm welcome, with a bespoke lifestyle-app for access control, parcel pick-up and laundry monitoring.
  • Social learning space which caters for individual and group learning, with laptop-links to large monitors

An exceptional student experience
At Paradise Street, student wellbeing – in the widest sense – is at the heart of the design. This is not just a place for students to sleep and eat, but a place to study, relax and entertain:

  • The form and layout of the building provides shelter from the busy ring road and the detailed design offers an intimate and individual journey to each front door.
  • Variety in the residential and learning experience is provided with a range of house types and configurations, with living rooms and common areas offering the choice of individual or group study and interaction.
  • A 2,000sqm piazza offers a variety of settings for study and recreation, including table tennis and a trim trail and provides a venue for international food stalls, outdoor cinema and open-mike nights; and leads on to a common room providing social learning space for study and gaming.
  • Internally each room benefits from floor-to-ceiling height windows, with impressive views out across the city as soon as you open your front door. Each element of each room has been considered with the needs of today’s students in mind with clean lines and generous storage.

Choice and flexibility
A variety of accommodation caters for a mixed community, with homes arranged within:

  • 17 studio rooms providing self-catering accommodation
  • 876 study bedrooms arranged in cluster flats ranging in size from 6 to 12 rooms each sharing a kitchen and separate living room.

Paradise Street offers a variety of spaces for study and relaxation, including:

  • A café and common room with large monitors that can be used for gaming
  • A 133sqm gym (amongst the largest across Coventry student halls) offers an alternative to expensive city-centre facilities

Student Support & Pastoral Care
Paradise Street offers a 24 hour concierge and an on-site maintenance team; with students able to use smart-phone technology for access control, parcel-drops and laundry monitoring.
