FBM were appointed by in LB Southwark to develop underutilised sites across the borough as part of the fourth phase of the ‘New Council Home’s Programme’. The proposed site, currently occupied by a car park, would be redeveloped to create 18 new homes across eight storeys, in the form of a “pencil” tower. The new block aligns with the geometry the existing Matson House. As part of the wider site strategy, a new permeable public route is formed connecting Stalham Street to the estate green and basketball court.
The majority of the facades are brick with decorative elements and details contributing positively to the character of the neighbourhood. The main elevations face west and east. They will have a regular window pattern and have a simple vertical order across the building. Within each opening, further detail and interest byadding brick panels to the side of the windows. The proposed lower floor levels include inset balconies to reduce overlooking and visually connect with the height of Matson House.Above this, part recessed, part projecting balconies are proposed to help vary the overall appearance and create a ‘top’ to the building.
