Founded in 1991, FBM Architects is an award-winning London-based practice working across the residential, education, commercial and arts sectors. Over more than three decades, we have built a reputation for delivering thoughtful, well-crafted architecture on complex sites and briefs, often within constrained conditions and limited resources. Much of our work has originated through design competitions, fostering a culture of rigorous thinking, innovation and design excellence.
Our work is design-led and strongly contextual, responding carefully to place, programme and people. We work closely with clients and collaborators to develop clear architectural ideas and carry them through from concept to completion, ensuring the original design intent is realised in the built work. Our projects combine modern materials and construction technologies with fine craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Housing and regeneration form a significant part of our practice. We have experience delivering residential projects at a wide range of scales, from bespoke one-off homes to large mixed-use developments and social housing. Recent projects include Bancroft and Wickford Street and Regent Place, both award-winning schemes that have received significant industry recognition and demonstrate FBM Architects’ ability to deliver high-quality housing on complex urban sites. Completed projects include Pembury Circus in Hackney, a residential-led regeneration providing mix-tenure new homes alongside a community centre for Peabody, widely recognised for its contribution to placemaking and community life.
FBM Architects has a strong track record in the arts and culture sector, working with forward-thinking organisations whose success depends on creativity and innovation. Completed projects include the Museum of the Mind and Bethlem Gallery, the first UK venue dedicated to the history of mental health treatment.

We have also delivered projects for organisations within the knowledge economy, including flexible, high-performance workplaces for IBM and state-of-the-art learning environments for the London School of Economics and other leading universities.
Sustainability is integral to the studio’s design approach. FBM Architects has specialist expertise in Passivhaus design, low-energy buildings and retrofit, working across sensitive heritage refurbishments and contemporary new-builds in urban, rural and landscape-led settings. Our Passivhaus refurbishment of a family home on the Thamesmead Estate was named by The Guardian as one of the UK’s top ten eco homes. In the education sector, the £29m sustainable refurbishment of the Cockcroft Building at the University of Brighton received Higher Education Project of the Year at the AJ Retrofit Awards.
Our contextual design approach has led to projects in a wide range of settings — from new neighbourhoods adjacent to wildlife reserves, to sites next to scheduled ancient monuments, within the green belt, flood plains and conservation areas, as well as dense urban and city-centre locations. The practice has a proven track record in the refurbishment and extension of historic buildings, including the Grade I listed Slade School of Fine Art and Wilkins Building at University College London.
