We are delighted that our New Science Building at the University of East Anglia has been named ‘BIM Project of the Year’ at the 2020 BIM Awards, which honour and recognise the world’s best BIM work and those who created it, by celebrating their exceptional and innovative use of BIM in the built environment.
Simon Fraser, Director of FBM Architects said:
“We are delighted that the New Science Building at UEA has been named Project of the Year at the 2020 BIM Awards. Perhaps the most counter-cultural thing we do today as architects is bring people together. In designing the New Science Building at the University of East Anglia, BIM helped us do just that; transparency and collaboration formed the DNA of both the technology and the team. Using BIM, we turned a complex brief into a flexible space in which different disciplines can explore science in a new way. This is what ‘value engineering’ should really mean.”
Picking up the award at the ceremony in Newcastle on 26th February 2020, Sangeeta Shenoy, Associate Director, explained:
“In the design of the state of the art Science Building for the University of East Anglia, our use of BIM de-risked the tender process, enabling the building to be delivered £2m under budget with significant savings to the client that were reinvested towards the benefit of this project as well as other new projects. The complex services were successfully co-ordinated using BIM, including 55 fume cupboards,10500 linear metres of pipework, an 890m2 super-lab for teaching 140 students simultaneously, and a 28m high chimney. BIM facilitated a transparent digital design process with a user-friendly interface allowing clients to be involved at all times (including from home on their iPads). Augmented reality was used successfully to engage with prospective students and research partners.”
The BIM Award is the latest in a long line of accolades for the New Science Building which opened in September 2019.
