We have been appointed by Homes for Lambeth, Lambeth Council’s House Building Company, to develop new homes on vacant and underutilized sites across the borough. We have recently submitted a planning application for new homes and a community centre on two sites within the Vauxhall Gardens Estate.
Our proposals for the Orsett Street site involve the clearance of the existing construction compound and the erection of a new seven storey building which will provide 38 new private apartments. The delivery of market housing on the site will fund new affordable homes and a community centre on the nearby Carmelita Centre site.
The new homes are arranged in an L shaped block which wraps around the site. Maisonettes on the ground and first floor have their own front doors and patio garden overlooking the street, with apartments above served by a gallery access.
Our design proposals have paid particular attention to the sequence of spaces into each home, with welcoming and inviting lobbies and communal spaces providing appropriate storage and utility space for residents.
The massing, appearance and detail design of the new building has been carefully tested to offer a contemporary but contextual response to the surrounding townscape.
Our proposals were submitted to Lambeth Council’s Planning Department in August 2020.
