Frogmore Road / Hemel Hempstead

The regeneration of a site on the Frogmore Industrial Estate in Hemel Hempstead, adjoining the Grand Union Canal, provides 184 new homes.

Apartments are arranged around large courtyards, with the spaces between buildings improving connectivity to the canal towpath. Flood risk means active frontages on the ground floor were challenging to achieve, but by careful arrangement of the new buildings it was possible to incorporate an apartment at each corner location above the flood risk level, providing passive surveillance and activity at ground floor level.

Clad in brick, with shadow gaps and changes in texture set under a pitched pediment, the design of the new buildings draws on the industrial heritage of the site.

Our client was Bellway Homes (North London).
